Read a Book Before Bed

In an era of infinite scroll, the deliberate act of opening a physical book is one of the most powerful pre-sleep interventions available. Not because of the story โ€” but because of what sustained reading does to the stressed mind.

Why Reading Works Where Other Rituals Fail

Reading addresses the mind's tendency to self-perpetuate arousal.

When you are genuinely absorbed in a story, your mind is occupied with the characters' problems rather than your own. This is not escapism; it is neurological displacement of rumination.

Physical Book vs. E-Reader vs. Tablet

Begin reading at least 20โ€“30 minutes before your intended sleep time. Do not read in bed initially if you have difficulty associating bed with sleep โ€” sit in a comfortable chair, then move to bed when genuinely drowsy. This preserves the bed as a sleep-only stimulus cue.
